– Survey ship arrives
The Guyana leg of the marine survey to confirm the route for the new US$60M submarine fibre-optic cable system will begin on April 19/20 with the arrival of the marine survey vessel, MV Southern Relentless in local waters on April 18.
The vessel, which will spend approximately 18 days in this country’s territorial waters, will along with another craft, SV GEO, conduct near shore surveys aimed at determining the best possible route for the landing of the new cable, the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GT&T) announced yesterday.
This exercise follows a similar operation recently conducted off the shore of neighbouring Suriname whose national telephone carrier Telesur along with GT&T, are partners in the construction of the new cable.
The two companies on December 29, last, signed a joint agreement in Paramaribo, for the construction of a 1174 km cable, which would realize an increase in telecom bandwidth by some 3,000 to 4, 000 times what is currently available through the Americas 11 Cable and satellite links.
Several preparatory phases are to be completed during this year with the actual laying of the cable project to commence by the first quarter of 2010.
GT&T said routine public updates will be released as this highly complex project unfolds.
GT&T’s CEO Maj. General (ret’d) Joseph Singh, during the signing of the agreement had said that “the new cable will ensure sufficient capacity to more than cover all foreseeable transmission requirements. The cable will also provide a more secure redundancy to the current Americas 11 and satellite links, virtually eliminating the possibility of international communication outage to residential and business users.”
President Jagdeo said that the laying of the cable will positively impact growth and development of the telecommunications sector in Guyana and will consequently influence the expansion and development of our economic and social wellbeing.
The Guyana Defence Force Coast Guard, the Maritime Administration Department, the Fisheries Department, Sea and River Defence Department, the Sea and River Defence Board, Ministry of Public Works- Work Services Group and the Environmental Protection Agency are all collaborating with GT&T in this exercise.
