National under-19 opening batsman Jeetendra Sookdeo has been appointed Captain of the Demerara under-19 team which will oppose Essequibo in the opening round of the GTM Three-Day competition in Essequibo.
The competition was scheduled to commence today at Anna Regina but has been postponed due to the inclement weather.
The Guyana Cricket Board yesterday disclosed that a new date for the commencement of the first round will be set on Monday but added that the venue will remain the same.
Sookdeo, a stylish left-handed batsman and one of three players in the 14-man squad with regional under-19 experience, missed the Demerara Cricket Board Inter-Association under-19 limited overs competition due to a back injury and his inclusion should strengthen the batting.
Guyana under-19 player Trevon Griffith, who led Georgetown in the Inter-Association tournament, should open the batting with fellow left-hander Sookdeo while unorthodox left-arm spinner Totaram Bishun is the other player in the squad with National under-19 experience.
Six players who represented Guyana in last December’s regional under-17 competition in Trinidad are also in the squad which includes 11 players from DCB under-19 champions Georgetown.
Ryan Rajmangal, Vickesh Dhaniran, Rajendra Nickbarran, Kishan Shivgobin, Delon Fernandes and wicketkeeper Dexter Solomon should carry the batting while left-arm pacer Andre Stoll and medium pacer Carl Rambarose can all be termed all-rounders at this level. Bishun, who played in the regional under-19 series in St Kitts in 2007 and Barbados last year, will lead the spin attack with support from the national under-17 spin pair of off-spinner Ricardo Devers and former West Indies under-19 leg-spinner Amir Khan, who took the only hat-trick in the DCB under-19 competition.
Shivgobin should provide support with his leg spin while Guyana under-17 pacers Seon Daniels and Stoll, along with Rambarose are the three pacers selected to travel to Essequibo.
National under-17 Coach Orin Bailey will Coach the side while Mustapha Kadir is the Manager. Six stand bys have also been selected and the team is expected to participate in a short camp and possibly play a practice match before their first game in Region two.
The Demerara U-19 squad read: – Jeetendra Sukdeo (Captain), Trevon Griffith
