Two Guyanese with West Indies female cricket experience should play pivotal roles in the USA team to compete in the ICC Americas 2009 Women’s Cricket Tournament
scheduled for May 17-24 at the Broward County Regional Park in Lauderhill, Florida.
Berbician Candacy Atkins has been named Vice-Captain of the Roselyn Emmanuel-led squad which will be coached by former Demerara and Guyana all-rounder Indomatie Goordial-John who had moved to St Vincent and represented that Island in the last West Indies Women’s cricket tournament.
New York Regional Women’s Cricket Coordinator Venelda Wallace will manage the squad which includes two American-born players Sandra Ibarra and 15-year old Sonakshi Sagar, both of whom were recently introduced to the sport.
The 25-year-old Atkins, who played nine ODIs and a single Test match against Pakistan five years ago in Pakistan for the West Indies, is expected to play a key role for her adopted country with her right-handed batting and medium pace bowling.
The 23-year-old Goordial-John also played a solitary Test against Pakistan and 10 ODIs for the West Indies. Atkins and Goordial-John were the last Guyanese before Erva Giddings to represent the West Indies female team although 16-year-old Guyana under-19 female captain Shamaine Campbell was a reserve for the regional team which contested the Women’s World Cup last month in Australia.
The team was selected following a domestic Conference tournament in Lauderhill,
Florida, at the end of March, a tournament that saw some of the ladies donning cricket
gear for the first time in a competitive environment. Other nations participating in
ICC Americas tournament are Argentina, Bermuda, Brazil, Canada, and Trinidad & Tobago.
“The squad is a blend of experienced players and some newcomers to the sport.
The USA is looking to use this tournament as a vehicle for attracting younger female cricketers,” said USACA’s 2nd Vice President and Director of Cricket Operations Sheikh Manaf Mohamed.
The squad is:-Roselyn Emmanuel (Captain), Candacy Atkins (Vice Capt.), Debbie Martha Bally, Shirley Ann Bonaparte, Doris Francis, Devonie, Colleen Hayles, Sandra Ibarra, Catherine Joy Jones, Malathi Priyanjani Joseph, Ivy Mahabir, Deowantie Lisa Persaud, Diana Richelieu, Sonakshi Sagar and Isoline Sutherland, Venelda Wallace (Manager), Indomatie Goordial-John (Coach).
