The Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation has named a three man team to compete at the 3rd Annual Caribbean Islands Bench Press and Powerlifting Championships set for Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands May 14 – 16, 2009.
The lifters selected are John ‘Big John’ Edwards currently ranked 30th in the world and 1st in the Region and the present holder of three regional records in the Masters M 1 125kg class, Mervin ‘Spongy’ Moses, silver medalist in the 82.5kg class at the 2008 NAPF Regional Championships but now lifting in his correct weight class (75kg) and Randolph Morgan, the Current National Champion and best lifter at the 2008 GAPF championship in the 82.5kg class.
The team will be managed by The President of the Federation Peter Green who will use the opportunity to seek developmental assistance from the Regional Body as well as gain a first hand look at the international requirements prior to Guyana’s hosting of the 4th Annual Bench Press and Caribbean Championships in March – April of next year.
The members of the team have already acquired their visas from the United States Embassy and have embarked on a vigorous sponsorship drive to assist with off setting the costs of attending.
The team is slated to depart Guyana on May 13th for the USVI, returning on May 19th.
The team is expected to utilise the opportunity to distribute information brochures amongst the international athletes as they seek to place Guyana on the Tourism Map.

GAPF Novices Championship
Meanwhile, the Federation will be hosting its Banks DIH Limited sponsored Novices Championship on Sunday April 26 at a venue to be decided.
Athletes from Berbice, Linden West Demerara and Georgetown are expected to collide.
