– minibus driver flees
A route 45-minibus driver hastily disappeared after plunging his vehicle into a canal alongside the treacherous Coldingen Turn early yesterday morning.
The bus was completely submerged in the high waters of the canal due to the incessant rain on Thursday and it was only until the water receded yesterday morning that motorists traveling along the road made the bizarre discovery.
Several curious persons stopped their vehicles to enquire what had caused the mishap but no one was able to say since the occupants of the bus had all disappeared.
At first it was believed that the driver of the bus had stolen a trip to the East Coast and being unfamiliar with the turn, he lost control and plunged into the canal.
There was heavy jostling by two truck owners who challenged each other for the task of pulling the vehicle out.
Eventually, the Chico Ramas Service Centre won out.
Later in the day the still nervous driver turned up at the Vigilance Police Station to retrieve his vehicle.
He told this newspaper that he was heading further up the East Coast to drop some spare parts for a friend when he dashed to avoid colliding with another motorist who appeared to be under the influence of alcohol, causing him to veer his bus into the trench.
He said that since he was alone and the bus was quickly being covered he hastily exited the bus and climbed out of the canal.
It was in the wee hours of the morning and he managed to catch a taxi and head to the city.
And late yesterday afternoon, the crash truck was also called upon to remove a car that ended up in the same position. Joseph Carll, of Pouderoyen, was the driver of the car.
Police said that the man was heading up the East Coast when he lost control of his vehicle.
Fortunately, he too managed to free himself.
