Dear Editor,
I have read recently of GWI blacklisting contractors because of litigation matters. However, it is well documented both in literature and research that corruption in the public sector has its origin from the private sector. It was interesting to read recently that the contractors at GWI got frustrated over a period of time after offering ‘kickback’ in return for contracts.
But what was most interesting is that those contractors who are equally guilty of corruption, if in fact the allegations are true, had no action taken against them by the company’s board of directors. Why? It is also well documented that despite the allegations of “kickback” for contracts allocations, a careful examination of those trends will find much wanting as it relates to equal opportunities for all and the so called level playing field.
Karan Singh as we all know is a very controversial and strong individual. So many things have been said about him in the past but he was still able to be in the top brass in this country. What is evident about Singh’s recent tenure at GWI is the massive transformation of the water sector.
Take a look at the company’s corporate complex now for yourself. Areas that use to receive poor level of service during the days of Severn Trent are now receiving water, at least at the standpipe level.
In conclusion, it is my opinion that an independent body should have been set up to carry out the investigation at GWI rather than allowing the Internal Audit Department and the Board to conduct such an investigation, as I do not think that the investigation was done in a fair manner.
Let’s hope that the new management team can continue the work that Karan Singh has left. Good job Karan on cleaning up Severn Trent mess!
