Elcock Stable puts in yet another dominant performance
Dubbed ‘the battle of Port Mourant’, the much hyped up Port Mourant Turf Club annual One day seven event horserace meet, lived up to all expectations.
Turfites saw Miss Republic of the Colin Elcock Delmur Shipping company Stable showing that it is time for the new brigade to take over when it conquered all to win the coveted $340,000 and the Beautiful Dr Dwight Walrond trophy ahead of stablemate Delmur Gold in the feature B class event over 1200m.
All of the races were exciting with La Bayamosa taking the Three Year old Derby and the Message sending a warning to its opponent in the winning the F class race.
The arena was packed to capacity as the large Easter holiday crowd jammed into the venue and saw one of the most exciting days of racing and according to pundits the best for the year so far. With over $3M up for the taking and over 70 horses entered one could not have asked for more.
With one of the largest fields entering the feature B class gallop, all 11 starters had a chance entering into the starting gates. As the gates flew open it was Love U Dee that took the lead along with Isle Be True as they were pressed by Delmur Gold, Miss Republic and Annie’s Playmate.
As the horses raced into the back stretch, Delmur Gold made a move for the front as they jockeyed for position around the far turn. Piloted by Paul Delph, Miss Republic decided to make its move and as the horses entered into the home stretch a battle was still in the making with the two front runners from the Delmur Shipping Company stable.
To the joy of owner Colin Elcock, Miss Republic pulled away from Delmur Gold mounted by Yap Drepaul, to complete the 1-2 for his stable. Annie’s Play Mate ridden by B. Sukhoo held on for third ahead of Isle Be True with Michael Semple on board as the others faded out of contention.
The Three year old Derby also had its fair share of excitement as the fierce competition continued. As the horses burst out of the starting gates it was a jostle for the lead with two of the favourites in Sweet Romance and Coconut Boy sprinting out in front.
However, it was La Bayamosa, known for blistering finishes, quickly reined in Coconut Boy, as Sweet Romance fought and caught up with the front runners.
With Coconut Boy holding into the final bend, La Bayamosa with Kumar Singh in the saddle thundered out of the bend and up the straight like a bullet to claim the $240,000 prize as Coconut boy with Daniel Flores finished second. Sweet Romance with the experienced Michael Semple on the mount showed good resolve to hold on for third in the 1400m race.
In other results, the F class and Lower 1400m gallop saw Colin Elcock’s newly imported The Message with Paul Delph in the stirrups distancing its self from the field with every passing stride to win by four lengths to carry away the $220,000 available for the winner. The Gap was second, Fire Power finished third and Laura Lee in Flight fourth.
The H and lower 1200m was won by Finishing Touch in a driving finish from Royal Champion as Perfect Drift settled for third.
There was a reversal for position in the ‘I’ 2 event with Royal Champion taking the crown from Finishing in another nail biting event to carry away the $120,000 first prize over 1200m
The Unclassified division 1 and 2 race saw a win for Brown Boy from Funny Side, Bounty Flyer with Wonder Lite fourth in the $100,000 race over 1200m.
Bounty Flyer captured the Unclassified Division 3 event and the $90,000 purse ahead of Foolish Pleasure with Clear Victory third covering 1200m.
The champion jockey was Krishna Singh ahead of Paul Delph, while Colin Elcock took the Champion Owner and the champion trainer prizes, compliments of Kevin Sunich of Trophy Stall in Bourda Market.
