The Ministry of Culture Youth and Sports Inter-Block football tournament will commence its second edition tomorrow at the Betterverwagting (BV) Community Centre ground at 4:00pm.
Parliamentary Secretary in the Sports Ministry, Steve Ninvalle, disclosed that following the BV competition, the action moves to Victoria on the East Coast then to Mahdia for the Independence Anniversary edition in the interior location.
He disclosed that all systems are in place for the commencement and staging of the event at the various venues.
At a media brief at Ninvalle’s office this week, football coach Joseph ‘Bill’ Wilson gave details of the tournament and spoke of some of its benefits to the development of the sport.
Wilson informed that the BV leg will run for five days, April 18, 24, 26, May 1 and 4 when the grand finale will be staged. On May 4, one supporting game will see the female teams of Buxton and Victoria clashing.
The BV teams have been divided into four blocks; A, B, C, D; and the opening action pits C against B at 4:00pm while in the nightcap at 6:00pm, A tackle D. The round robin format will see the leaders colliding in the final.
It was also disclosed by Wilson that this year, Under-13 games will accompany the seniors to give the younger players the opportunity to showcase their skills.
Last year the Under-15s were in action.
Wilson noted that the basic objective of the event was to create a greater appreciation of football among people in the community, create a friendly rivalry among the players and residents also and attract new fans to the sport, especially ladies and parents of mainly the younger players. He also noted that one key area of the objectives of the tournament was to identify new talent that could be included at the club and possible national level.
