The Fifth Summit of the Americas begins today even as the city of Port-of-Spain is in a complete lockdown. Heads of State, including Guyana’s President, Bharrat Jagdeo, arrived yesterday on the twin island republic.
The Summit of the Americas brings together the Heads of State and Government of the Western Hemisphere to discuss common concerns, seek solutions and develop a shared vision for their future development of the region, be it economic, social or political in nature.
Just about US$100M was spent by the Trinidadian authorities in preparation for the summit.
The summit is being hosted under the theme, “Securing Our Citizens’ Future by Promoting Human Prosperity, Energy Security and Environmental Sustainability.”
United States of America President, Barack Obama is expected to attend and the event will give him the opportunity to address the leaders of Latin America directly.
The progress made at the previous four Summits of the Americas and the two Special Summits provide a solid basis for developing a focused, integrated and results oriented Inter-American Agenda that encourages the effective engagement of civil society, the private sector, indigenous peoples, afro-descendants, women, youth and regional institutions in the Summit Process.
