Uncle charged for nephew’s crime

Shawn Harvey, 32, of 144 James Street, Albouystown, was placed on $100,000 bail yesterday by Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson.
It was alleged that the accused, on April 7, last, with the intent to disfigure or cause grievous bodily harm, wounded Devon Case. He was not required to plead.
Harvey was represented by attorney-at-law Mortimer Coddett.
The lawyer further stated that his client has no knowledge of the crime, adding that he was held since last Thursday without being charged.
Coddett explained that real reason why his client was kept so long was that the police knew that his nephew was the person who was wanted for the chopping.
He said that the police kept Harvey because they thought that they could have lured in his nephew, but the nephew is yet to be found by the police.
The lawyer asked for bail in a reasonable sum. However, Case told a different story in court yesterday.
Case said that he was heading home when he was attacked by the defendant’s nephew. He said that he was pulled off his bicycle into a yard and the nephew along with other relatives started to beat him.
Case said that he saw Harvey behind him and that Harvey stabbed him in the hand with a white handled knife.
He added that Harvey ran into his house and brought a cutlass and gave it to his nephew. “He run out and said ‘Look de cutlass; chop he up’,” Case explained.
He said that he was repeatedly chopped and had to be rescued by his father who took him to the hospital.
Police Prosecutor Denise Griffith then told the court that Case had owed Harvey’s nephew, who had confronted him. The prosecutor said that although Case said that he was stabbed in the hand by Harvey, his initial statement has no such information.
Harvey is expected to make his next court appearance on May 19.
