Despite no confirmation from President Bharrat Jagdeo, Police Commissioner Henry Greene is still likely to remain on the job for another three years.
Yesterday the President said that he has not yet confirmed Greene’s extension but is seriously considering the matter. He accused Kaieteur News of publishing a falsehood.
This newspaper had reported that Commissioner Henry Greene had been granted a three-year extension.
Greene attained the age of retirement, 55, on April 6 last and this newspaper had reported that he was given the extension on the job, a move that is evidence of the administration’s confidence in his tenure.
Although the extension of his tenure had not been officially announced, well placed sources confirmed that he had received the approval of the government.
President Bharrat Jagdeo had repeatedly expressed confidence in the work Greene has been doing as head of the Police Force.
The fact that Greene continued on the job although he had reached the age of retirement spoke volumes.
Greene, whose position as Commissioner of Police was only confirmed early this year, took over as the country’s top cop in November 2006 from Winston Felix.
Greene as Commissioner is widely acknowledged for his role in the dismantling of criminal gangs that had been plaguing the country for several years following the February 2002 jail break.
At the time he took over the force, the country was in the midst of a crime wave with gangs led by Rondell Rawlins carrying out brutal massacres of civilians and public outcry for a solution was overwhelming.
Greene also took a strong stance against corruption in the force with several ranks being placed before the courts.
He is now preparing to host the annual Association of Caribbean Commissioners of Police conference.
Greene did receive the support of President Jagdeo who had challenged the US authorities to provide the evidence to support allegations of his relations with drug trafficking.
The US authorities have so far not come forward with the evidence.
