By now, the name Rudolph Mitchell would have become a household one by dint of his exploits in the race walking fraternity.
On Sunday last, while most people were preparing to visit the National Park and other open areas to engage in the kite flying festival, Mitchell was training in preparation for the race walk from the old Complex site, Melanie Damishana, around the perimeter of the village and back to the place of origin.
The Cavaliers Sports and Tour Club (CSTC) organized the race and once again, Mitchell triumphed over a competitive field that included Jeremy Cornelius and Errol Ward, who finished in the second and third positions, respectively. The race marked Mitchell’s 87th victory and 13 closer to the coveted century he so craves.
Veteran Debidyal Harold claimed the first place in that category ahead of Andre Caine and Linden Williams, who came in 2nd and 3rd, respectively. All winners received trophies and prizes donated by the Office of the President.
Meanwhile, Chief Executive Officer of Four’s Tour Farms and village resident, Titus Sutton, commended the race organizers for their efforts to stage the race in the village. He also disclosed that the community was so heartened by the effort, that they have requested more events of this nature. As such, the CSTC has planned another event slated for the same venue, this time the walkers would compete over a distance of 15 laps around the village once again commencing from the old complex and culminating at the place of origin.
Another, a 10 laps event, would follow this race slated for Arrival Day.
