Fame is not in their minds. All they long for is the adulation of their peers, the smiles on the faces of their parents and teachers, and a continuous pursuit of their education in music.
As they slowly make their way on stage, rigidly following the rules, amateur musicians in Guyana are looking to display their individual musical experiences and benefit from the feedback of professional adjudicators that would spur them to do more.
Yesterday, one could see their drive to excel. In Girls Vocal Solo (15-20 years) some sought the realm of opera, some struggled to prevent breathing within syllables and were reprimanded for it (that’s an absolute “no no”), but their drive was there.
In the end, it was Hillary Bose’s soulful rendition of the national song “Twilight” by Cecile E. Burgan-Nobrega that won the hearts of the adjudicators.
But there were not too many persons in attendance, and it is hoped that the continuation of the Festival will see more tickets being sold.
The Festival continues today with Boys and Girls Vocal Solo, Verse Speaking, Junior Church Choirs, Nursery School Action Song, Pioanoforte Solo Under 12 and School Steelbands.
The festival is being held at Bishops’ High School.
The Guyana Music Festival is credited with discovering the talent of great musicians such as renowned pianist Ray Luck.
The festival is being held under the patronage of Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr Frank Anthony, and has the support of the Ministry of Education.
Professor Vibert Cambridge is sponsoring a US$500 prize for a special category featuring “Bird Songs of Guyana.”
The Guyana Music Festival was held regularly from 1952-1973.
The competition was later moved on to be part of Guyfesta. Efforts to revive the Festival were made in 1994 and again in 1997, but were never followed through.
