Two men yesterday made appearances at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court for stealing from their respective employers.
Paul Chan, 27, of Craig, East Bank Demerara, who appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson, allegedly stole one pair of ladies shoes from Exclusive Styles on April 8. He pleaded guilty.
He told the court that he was employed at the Camp Street Store as a security guard and was forced to steal the shoe because of the financial crisis.
He said he was prepared to sell the shoe in order to get money.
The court heard that on the day in question Chan removed the shoe which was on display and hid at a nearby stand. He was fined $25,000 with an alternative of 18 months’ imprisonment.
And in the same court, 21-year-old Basil Stoll was charged for a similar offence.
This store clerk who was employed at the Hanes Store on Robb Street is accused of stealing one T-shirt from the store on Easter Day.
Stoll too pleaded guilty.
He told the court he took the T-shirt because it was a ‘brand name’ and he wasn’t thinking at the time.
The court was told that on the day in question the owner of the store, Ron Morrison upon closing up for the day instructed the security guard to search every employee since he had noticed that the item was missing.
When Stoll was searched the T-shirt was found in his pants pockets. He too was fined $25,000 with an alternative of 18 months’ imprisonment.
