The Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GT&T), recognising the pace of development at Lethem and the likelihood of increased cross border traffic once the bridge across the Takatu River is officially opened, commissioned another cell site in that border community.
Lethem is a key trading and agricultural border community which links Guyana with its vast South American neighbour, Brazil.
A press statement from the telephone company stated that the new site, apart from augmenting the service of an earlier commissioned GT&T site, will allow more villages in that vast region to access mobile phone service.
It was explained that preliminary feedback from residents suggests that the network’s signal has now eclipsed that of the competitor in at least one district, while matching that provided in other parts of the Rupununi sub-region.
Residents in the village of St. Ignatius and its environs, including Kumu, Parashara and Nappi are able to access the network, while further changes to the positioning of the antenna at the Lethem Central site has resulted in coverage being extended to areas South/South East of the site including Manari and Pirara.
It was noted that cellular customers, apart from continuing to enjoy the wide range of services and offers of the Company, including the lowest rates across networks, will also be able to connect to the internet via their handsets since there is GPRS functionality in place.
The statement noted that Lethem, like Bartica, where a second cell site was also recently commissioned, is a community that can boast of increasing economic and social development. Both communities also hope to be recipients of township status in the future.
