Defending overall champions, Guyana was off to an impressive and promising start in the 2009 Caribbean Cadet and Junior Table Tennis Championships when the event opened on Monday at the renowned Marriott Dome in St Kitts.
Guyana struck first when they whipped hosts, St Kitts 3–0 in the under–15 girls’ team competition. From reports reaching Kaieteur Sport, the defending champions and Puerto Rico are favorites to meet in the final of this event.
Angelisa Freeman, Oreika Lennon and Shinelle Mc Calla represented St Kitts against the Guyanese trio that included Adielle Rosheuvel, Chelsea Edghill and Akecia Nedd in the under–15 girls’ team competition yesterday.
Guyana won the first match 11–4, 11–0 and 13–11, the second match saw Guyana again coming out on top 11–2, 11–4 and 11–9 while the third match, on the way to Guyana’s 3–0 sweep, was won 11–14, 12–10 and 11–0.
Similarly, the Puerto Ricans, easily dismissed Barbados to ensure that the message of the frontrunner was clearly communicated. Daneily Rios, Melanie Diaz and Zoe Rivera were the players that represented Puerto Rico in their 3–0 win.
In the eagerly anticipated group match between Guyana and Puerto Rico that perhaps was a foreshadow of the final, Puerto Rico fought long and hard before Guyana surrendered 3–0 in what was described as an “international affair”.
Puerto Rico turned back a strong Guyanese challenge when they won game one 11–7, 3–11 and 8–11. However, the Guyanese players returned with a strong and interesting 11–13, 11–5, 11–8, 7 –11 and 9–11 response in game two.
But the Puerto Ricans, already leading 2–0 wrapped up the three love victory with an 11–7, 11–13 and 11–9 triumph that took them to the top of the standing with Guyana ranking second heading into today’s competition.
It was also indicated that Guyana’s Trenace Lowe has reached the final in the under–18 girls’ singles competition. The Championships continue today with more under–15 and under–8 male and female events.
Among the countries competing at the prestigious International Table Tennis Federation sanctioned competition are Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, Aruba, Grenada, Curacao, Guyana, Puerto Rico and host St Kitts and Nevis.
