Sewnarine Chattergoon registered his fifth first class century on his Guyana captaincy debut, while leg-spinner Nikolai Charles grabbed a maiden five-wicket haul for Barbados on the last day of their drawn final round WICB regional four-day cricket match at the Providence Stadium yesterday.
Twenty-three-year-old Bajan Kevin Stoute, who finished the competition with 604 runs and 22 wickets from nine matches, collects his Man-of-the-Match award from Guyana Cricket Board Secretary Anand Sanasie.
The 28-year-old Chattergoon added 42 to his overnight 72 while debutant Vishal Singh (34), first innings centurion Royston Crandon (39), leg-spinner Davendra Bishoo (39) and pacer Esaun Crandon (31) all got ‘starts’ as Guyana were bowled out on the stroke of Tea for 360.
Twenty-two year-old Charles ended with 5-99 from 32 overs while Man-of-the-match Kevin Stoute who made a career best 186 and took 3-59 in the Guyana first innings, supported with 2-19.
Set an improbable 299 to win from a minimum of 15 overs plus the mandatory 15, Barbados lost 16-year-old Kraig Braithwaite (15) off Esaun Crandon before reaching 67-1 when the game was called off at 16:07hrs.
Scores: Guyana 334 & 360, Barbados 396 & 67-1.
Guyana began the final day on 167-3 and lost Vishal Singh at 228-4 when the left-hander was caught behind off Charles who also removed Chattergoon at 257-5 when the left-hander swept a catch to short fine leg after batting for 322 minutes, 206 balls and hitting 17 fours and a six in his 111.
Debutant Keeper Delbert Hicks (6) was run out just after lunch at 277-6 while Royston Crandon edged Charles to the keeper when 11 away from his sixth score above fifty for the season as Guyana slipped to 291-7.
Esaun Crandon was then run out at 355-8 after adding 64 for the eighth wicket with Bishoo.
Five runs later, Veerasammy Permaul (0) was leg before to Charles while Bishoo was also removed by the leg-spinner who bowled unchanged from the Northern end for most of the Guyana innings yesterday.
Braithwaite failed to control a short delivery from Esaun Crandon when Barbados batted a second time and spooned a catch to short mid-wicket while Skipper Kirt Edwards (29) and Sharmarh Brooks (12) were the undefeated batsmen when the game ended.
Guyana finished their worst ever season in the cellar position with 33 points from 12 matches while Barbados slumped from a reasonable good start to end with 60 points from their 12 matches and only ahead of Guyana on the points table. Jamaica retained their title by finishing with 106 points while the Windward Islands enjoyed one of their best seasons to finish second with 79 points in the seven-team tournament.
