Lower Corentyne claim 3rd
The Blairmont Community Centre ground will come alive with competitive action today when Central/Upper Corentyne tangle with West Berbice in the final of the Diamond Fire & General Insurance Company (DF&GIC) under-19 inter-zone competition.
Both finalists created upsets to reach the final, West Berbice edging past Lower Corentyne by one wicket, while Central/Upper Corentyne crushed New Amsterdam/Canje by 177 runs.
Central/Upper Corentyne will start as favourites with a better all round team but West Berbice, playing at home will be no easy walkover as Lower Corentyne found out.
All-rounder Alex Amsterdam, who scored a pugnacious 114 and snared 13 wickets for 45 runs in their crushing win over New Amsterdam/Canje, would be the key player for his team with national under-19 player Anthony Bramble, Mark Lionel, Chunilall Mankarran, Clinton Pestano and Mark Bheemsingh offering support in the batting department.
Central/Upper Corentyne bowling would be in the capable hands of pacers George Hughes and Calvern Beresford, backed up by spinners Amsterdam, Pradeep Singh, Chandrekar Arjune and Mankarran.
West Berbice’ batting would be led by Ajay Khan with support from Brendon Woolford, Sherwain McPherson, Raffel Estraido and Raun Johnson. Pacers Keon Fraser and Johnson lead a strong bowling attack that is capable of defending whatever total West Berbice posts. Sherwain McPherson, S. Mohan and Surujpaul Harripaul are also expected to feature.
The match starts at 10:00hrs today. Officials of the sponsors would meet both teams before the start of the match and will also be on
hand for the presentation.
The winner’s purse is $40, 000 and the championship trophy with the runner up to collect $30, 000.
The Berbice selectors would announce their 14-man squad immediately after the match.
Meanwhile, Lower Corentyne swept aside New Amsterdam/Canje by 9 wickets to claim the 3rd place in their contest which was played at the Port Mourant ground.
Batting first, New Amsterdam/Canje were bundled out for a paltry 96 in 24 overs. Seon Hetmyer 26, Jamal Henry and Steve De Freitas 13 each, the only batsmen reaching double figures.
Sahadeo Somai 5-31 and Terrence Madramootoo 2-21 were the main wicket takers for Lower Corentyne who in response amassed 184-3 in their allotted quota of 60 overs in the first innings.
Captain Eon Hooper top scored with 57 which included 5 boundaries while Dominic Rickey struck an unbeaten 50 and Manoj Pooranauth 40 not out (5 fours).
Batting a second time with a deficit of 88, New Amsterdam/Canje reached 130 with Hetmyer hitting 20, Vedesh Singh 16 and Stephen Lewis 15. Terrence Madramootoo continued his impressive performance in the tournament with figure of 3-28, Rocky Hutson 2-14 and Somai 2-22 supporting well.
Needing 43 for victory, Lower Corentyne knocked off the runs losing only one wicket with Harrinarine Chattergoon unbeaten on 26 (2 fours & 1 six).
For their efforts, Lower Corentyne received $20, 000 while New Amsterdam/Canje pocketed $15, 000.
