Junior Chess Champion, Taffin Khan, retained his superb form from the just concluded junior chess championship to add the Kei-Shar’s Easter Open trophy to his collection when that tournament concluded at the Keishar’s, Hadfield Street Sports Club, Saturday afternoon last.
The young chess star overcame an earlier loss to National Champion, Kriskal Persaud to amass 7 points which eventually handed him the championship over his arch rival, Persaud, who ended up in the second position with 6 1/2 points. Treasurer of the Chess Federation, Shiv Nandalall scored 6 points to occupy the final podium position.
For his efforts, Khan received a trophy and a twenty five thousand dollars gift certificate, while Persaud received a gift certificate for fifteen thousand dollars. Nandalall won a gift certificate of ten thousand dollars.
Michael Cleghorne received a gift certificate of five thousand dollars for the best newcomer, while in the junior category Kana Khan was adjudged the best newcomer and received a trophy and a fifteen thousand dollars gift certificate. Sham Khan also received a gift certificate on ten thousand dollars and Rashad Hussain a similar certificate for five thousand dollars. Crystal Khan received the best female prize.
Khan earned the right to play among the seniors after disposing of all comers to win the junior title earlier this year. From the time he entered the fray among his senior counterparts, the general view of the experts was that he would have created quite a few upsets. He did not disappoint.
During the just concluded tournament Persaud was held to a draw by Neil Khan in round five and suffered a loss to Shiv Nandalall in round six. The final day also produced quite a few interesting games. Among them were Brian Thompson’s win over President of the Federation, Errol Tiwari, while newcomer Michael Cleghorne defeated seasoned contender, David Khan.
The final points standing read: Taffin Khan (7) Michael Cleghorne and Dennis Dillon on five points apiece, Neil Khan, Brian Thompson, Alexander Duncan and Michael Perreira all ended on four and a half points each while David Khan ended on 4 points.
Irshad Mohamed and Errol Tiwari finished on 3 1/2 points each while Abdool Karamdat and Craig Sylvester both scored three points. Sherlock Atwell also amassed three points. Chino Chung, Alex Joseph, Raymond Sookdeo and Omar Shariff all scored two points apiece while Learie Webster ended up in the cellar with one point.
Two players, Omar Shariff and Learie Webster, withdrew from the tournament after completing the fourth round four because of personal commitments.
In the junior category, Kana Khan returned in fine form after taking a break from the game to capture the top prize, while his older brother Sham Khan placed second. Rashad Hussain claimed the final podium spot after the Median-Buchholz tie breaker system was applied.
The final points standing in this category read: Kana Khan (6 1/2), Sham Khan (6), Rashad Hussain and Crystal Khan (51/2 apiece). Nicholas Stephney, Cecil Cox and Clive Bender on five, Irshad Ishmael on four and a half, Khalid Gajraj and Imran Shaw on three and a half, Keron Simon on three, Judah Stephney on two and Aslam Hussain on one point.
The tournament was sponsored exclusively by Kei-Shar’s Gift Shoppe and Variety Store.
