Kevin Stoute fell 14 short of a maiden double century and Ryan Hinds hit an even ton as Barbados took a 62-run first innings lead against Guyana on the penultimate day of their WICB final round regional four-day cricket match at the Providence Stadium yesterday.
Stoute, overnight on 104, was last out for an accomplished 186 from 258 balls, 363 minutes with 24 fours and two sixes as Barbados, resuming on 267-3 in reply to Guyana’s 334, were dismissed for 396.
Test opener Sewnarine Chattergoon was unbeaten on 72 with Guyana on 167-3 in their second innings, enjoying a lead of 105 runs going into the final day.
With colourful Kites dancing merrily overhead under a cloudless sky, a sprinkling of spectators saw Hinds join Runako Morton and Floyd Reifer with three centuries this season before he lofted leg-spinner Davendra Bishoo to long-on after facing 191 balls, batting for 260 minutes and hitting 14 fours as the Guyanese broke the 239-run fourth wicket partnership to leave the visitors on 315-4.
Jason Holder (7) was then removed by Bishoo, who finished with 4-125, as Barbados slipped to 327-5 while Esaun Crandon sent back Carlo Morris (2) three runs later.
Nikolai Charles (9) was taken at slip off medium pacer Chris Barnwell at 364-7, Bishoo removed Kemar Roach (9) at 390-8 and Tino Best (0) was caught and bowled by left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul (2-60) at 391-9.
The versatile Stoute, who was again affected by cramps, tried to manipulate the strike as the 23-year-old attempted to convert his second hundred at this level in a double century as none of the last six Bajan batsmen reached double figures on a flat track and fast outfield.
Stoute was eventually taken at mid-off as Bishoo, Guyana’s leading bowler this season with 38 wickets, wrapped up the innings just after lunch, which was taken with Barbados on 372-7.
Both Hinds and Stoute were dropped off Brandon Bess by wicketkeeper Delbert Hicks who made an inauspicious start to his first class career behind the stumps.
Chattergoon, one of nine Berbicians in the team, began Guyana’s reply with three commanding boundaries off Roach while Barnwell also smashed the pacer to the point boundary before savagely pulling him through mid-wicket as the openers provided Guyana with a solid 56-run foundation.
Barnwell (21) was bowled by Holder on the stroke of Tea leaving Chattergoon unbeaten on 32 at the interval.
After the break, the 28-year-old Chattergoon reached his 20th fifty at this level from 64 balls, 94 minutes with eight fours as he and fellow left-hander Assad Fudadin carried the score to 132 before Guyana lost two wickets in three balls to slip to 132-3.
Fudadin, who played an array of delightful shots including two straight sixes each off spinners Charles and Shane Ramsay in his attractive 74-ball 42 with two fours and four sixes, was leg before to Stoute for the second time in the match.
Stoute, who swung the ball prodigiously seemed very fortunate to have a caught behind appeal against Gajanand Singh (0) upheld as Barbados struck twice in one over.
After a torrid time against Stoute (2-19), debutant Vishal Singh (14*) survived the rest of the session and along with the compact looking Chattergoon who has played four Tests, saw Guyana to the close without further loss.
