As expected, the big guns prevailed at the Guyana National Rifle Association’s 3-day Fullbore Championships which concluded on Sunday at the Timehri Rifle Ranges, Yarrowkabra, Linden Soesdyke Highway.
Some of the young guns had jumped ahead after the first day of competition but the seasoned campaigners knew that only the fittest would have survived, the rest now is history.
National Fullbore Captain Mahendra Persaud pulled out all the stops to dethrone close rival and friend Ransford Goodluck by 6 V Bulls with the winds at the Ranges saving its best for the third and final day.
It (wind) was at its trickiest, and tested the abilities of the shooters with rapid changes from left to right and gusts increasing and decreasing swiftly.
Shooting over 500, 600 and 1000 yards ranges, Persaud shot 34:4; 48:4 and 44:3 respectively to end with a final day score of 126:10.
Goodluck, shot 35:3; 47:4 and 45:3 to end the day with 127:10, Inspector Dane Blair who had upstaged the seasoned competitors to win the first day shoot finished 3rd overall with scores of 34:3; 48:3 and 44:3 totaling 126:9.
For the ‘O’ Class (juniors), Lt Colonel Terry Stewart shot 32:3; 41:2 and 42:2 to total 125:7.
However, the final day belonged to ACP Paul Slowe who shot the best score for the day with a total of 127:11 shooting 32:3 at 500, won the 600 yards with 49:3 and shot 46:5 at 1000 yards. Goodluck won at 500 while Senior Counsel Richard B. Fields shot 47:3 to win the 1000 yard range.
