West Berbice and Central/Upper Corentyne out hustled favourites Lower Corentyne and New Amsterdam/Canje respectively to book a place in the final of the Diamond Fire & General Insurance Company (DF&GIC) Berbice inter zone under-19 cricket tournament.
West Berbice squeezed past Lower Corentyne at Blairmont ground by one wicket while central/Upper Corentyne crushed new Amsterdam/Canje at the Port Mourant Ground.
At Port Mourant an outstanding all round performance from Berbice under-19 all rounder Alex Amsterdam led Central/Upper Corentyne to a commanding victory over pre match favourite New Amsterdam/Canje.
Batting first, Corentyne were all out for 182, Pradeep Singh hitting 30, Anthony Bramble 26 and Aric Angel 28.
Trinson Carmichael took 4-44 and Seon Hetmyer 3-17 to lead in the bowling department for New Amsterdam/Canje who were shot out for 106 despite a solid opening partnership of 60 between Joemal La Fleur (38) and Sean Baksh, 15.
After the opening pair only Videsh Singh with 17 offered any resistance as off spinner Amsterdam had the remarkable figures of 9-24 from 14 overs with 5 maidens.
Enjoying a lead of 76, Corentyne in their second innings posted 209 all out. Amsterdam again was in the limelight as he slammed 114, laced with 14 boundaries. He received support from Clinton Pestano 30.
Seon Hetmyer grabbed 4-39 bowling for New Amsterdam/Canje who needed 286 for an unlikely victory. They were sent packing for 108, losing by a massive 177 runs.
Joemal La Fleur and Seon Hetmyer with 23 apiece, Rocky Hutson 19 and Sean Baksh 16 were the highlight of their dismal batting display.
Amsterdam completed a dream match by taking 4-21 to follow up his 9-24 in the first innings to end with match figures of 13-45. Chandrekar Arjune 2-15.
This tournament is being
used by the Berbice Cricket Board to select their under-19 team for the upcoming GTM Inter County tournament.
Over at Blairmont, Lower Corentyne batting first in the two-day encounter posted 131 with Eon Hooper 34, Jonathan Foo and S. Hardial 32 as the main scorers.
Keon Fraser took 4-45, Sherwin McPherson 3-16 and Raun Johnson 2-10 bowling for West Berbice who were toppled for 80, Brendon Woolford and Phillip Edwards both with 18 were the only batsmen to offer any resistance. Engineering the damage with the ball for Lower Corentyne were Terrence Madramootoo with 3-6 and Sahadeo Somai 3-14.
Batting a second time Lower Corentyne enjoying a lead of 54 were dismissed for 105 with Harrinarine Chattergoon 27, Eon Hooper 21 and Jonathan Foo 15, the principal scorers.
Fraser again was the leading wicket taker for Lower Corentyne with 2-5 to end with match figures of 6-50. Ajay Khan assisted with 2-11 while Sherwin McPherson took 2-12 to add to his first innings share of 3-16.
Needing 160 for victory, West Berbice found themselves in desperate trouble tottering at 104-9 before D. Ramkissoon and Raun Johnson added an unbeaten 58 for the final wicket to take them to victory.
Ramkissoon was not out on 36 and Johnson 23 when victory was achieved. Earlier, B. Woolford scored 22. Foo took 4-48 and Somai 3-47 for the losers.
