A leak inside Guyana Power and Light’s (GPL) Kingston power plant sent oil spilling onto the Water and Barrack Streets, Kingston last night.
Vehicles traversing the area were forced to detour rather than drive through the oil slick which covered the width of the roadway.
Chief Executive Officer of GPL, Bharrat Dindyal, who was on the scene was unable to say much as to how the mishap occurred.
However, he said that the main concern was trying to contain the spill.
Up till press time, the cause of the spill was still undetermined.
A team from the Guyana Fire Service arrived on the scene but could do little. Suggestions were made to put sand on the road so that the sand could “sap up the oil.”
It is unclear how, and if, this oil spill will affect the power company.
The incident comes in the wake of the recent scandal involving the shipping of 75,000 gallons of contaminated heavy fuel oil to the Anna Regina power station.
The contaminated fuel caused damage to some of GPL’s machinery.
