Dumping of chicks at cemetery…
Tests by veterinarians have shown that the baby chicks that were dumped outside the Le Repentir cemetery were in fact healthy.
Yesterday an official within the Ministry of Agriculture said that the chicks seem to have been disposed by a hatchery, which might have over produced.
According to the official, this seems to have been an economic decision.
The official said that investigations are ongoing to determine which hatchery dumped the chicks, as it was not only an act of cruelty, but also, a clear case of improper disposal.
According to the official it was first suspected that the chicks might have contracted some sort of disease thus forcing immediate disposal.
On Thursday last, dozens of day-old baby chicks were dumped outside of Le Repentir Cemetery.
At the time veterinarians were trying to determine whether the chicks were infected with any disease.
This newspaper was told that veterinarians at the Ministry of Agriculture had taken samples to be tested.
Dr. Renard Overton of the Ministry of Agriculture’s diagnostic lab was at the site after reports surfaced.
Not all of the chicks were dead and drug addicts and scavengers took advantage to single out the suspected infected chicks for resale on the streets.
Another official had told Kaieteur News on the day of the discovery that recently, the Ministry received reports that many persons had been turning up at hatcheries and requesting that they be sold the chicks without vaccines.
According to the official, the chicks are sold at a cheaper rate without the vaccine but what persons do not realize is that there will be a higher mortality rate.
