GUYWA’S plans for ‘improving water supplies in Mackenzie, Linden’

I have observed contractors of GUYWA installing an 8-inch pipeline from the Amelia’s Ward water plant. I was a bit curious about this development and so I sought information from Regional officials on the purpose of this work.

I was shocked into disbelief when I learnt that it is GUYWA’s intention to supply the entire Mackenzie area from a plant which produces less than 200,000 gallons of water daily.

To understand the seriousness of the situation it is important for readers to know that at present water to Mackenzie residents is provided by two surface water treatment plants with a combined output of 1.2 million gallons per day. The Amelia’s Ward plant produces approximately one sixth of the present combined output of the Mackenzie plants.

Further, the plant at Amelia’s Ward in its present condition is incapable of providing residents of that community with a regular water supply.

Water rationing is employed with some residents receiving a supply for about three hours every three days. Most residents have to purchase water from suppliers at a cost of $2,000 for 400 gallons. This water is pumped from the Kara Kara creek into 400 gallon containers.

Imagine the hardship residents will experience when the Amelia’s Ward plant becomes the only source of supply for all residents of Mackenzie as well as Amelia’s Ward once the surface water treatment plants are shutdown.

This planned action on the part of GUYWA to reduce water supplies to Mackenzie is highly irresponsible and will put the welfare of residents at serious risk.
