Athletics returned to Berbice recently when the newly resuscitated Union/Renaissance sports Club of Upper Corentyne, which is based at the No53 Sports complex, recently successfully staged the first Desmond Dorsett classic run, which was for Under-17 athletes in the area.
The 3 1/2 miles race attracted some 15 persons, 13 males and two females. Nigel Melville was first across the finishing line to win from Wayne Wilson, Curtis Baynes, Linden La Fleur, Affiah Angel and Shemroy Sparman.
In the battle of the females Martina Johnson was able to get the better of Akimoso La Rose. At the end of the event which was held in honour of the late former retired Detective superintendent of police Desmond Dorsett, all the successful participants were presented with monetary awards compliments of the Dorsett family.
Ironically during the final stages of the preparation for the staging of the race the community leader and re-migrant Guyanese passed away after taking ill suddenly. The family however decided to proceed with the event.
His wife Waveney Dorsett, a retired Head Mistress, a community activist and a re-migrant and whose brain child it is behind the resuscitation of the once famous club, said that they decided to proceed with the event, because he would have wanted that.
He was always a community leader and sports enthusiast, even in his days in the Guyana police force.
According to Mrs. Dorsett, who has been returning home on a yearly basis to do charity work in the area, before deciding to re-migrate permanently, their hope was to make the club one of the leading lights in the county, a hope she still has.
Other activities the club is involved in at the moment are Circle Tennis, Cricket, football, volleyball, basketball and table tennis. The Mark Benschop Foundation is also conducting Computer class at the centre on Saturdays and there are plans to get involved in some more social activities.
The bug bear at the moment is the state of the building and the outfield which are in dire need of rehabilitation.
Mrs. Dorsett said they are a lot of young people in the area who are not employed and if some meaningful activities can be organized on a regular basis, it would go a far way in saving Guyana.
Mrs. Dorsett is calling on those who have an interest to get on board in an effort to assist, especially the youths in the area.
