Ms. Lowden’s conclusions are perplexing and illogical

This letter is in response to Ms. Marissa Lowden’s letter in the Guyana Chronicle titled “Brain drain versus brain gain.” (April 10, 2009).
I was very disappointed in the tone of her letter and had thought that the discussion would have been an enlightened one and would have led to serious national examination of the migration of skilled labour, but like a boxer “on the ropes,” Ms. Lowden couldn’t resist the temptation to make the discussion personal.
Once again, I find Ms. Lowden’s conclusions perplexing and illogical. She still believes that I need a lecture on the showy concept of brain circulation and she now thinks that I’m not open to new ideas because I have challenged her to develop a methodology and quantify the effects her “hypotheses” have had on Guyana.

I don’t pretend that have all the answers to any issue and that’s why I’ve called for critical assessments of the effects of “brain drain.” I really don’t know who Ms. Lowden has been talking to (her sources tell her that there are no negative effects of skilled migration and she believes that “brain circulation” has countered whatever negatives there might have been), but I’m certain that you would be hard pressed to find a business person, newspaper editor, school administrator, hospital administrator, etc. who would tell you that they have no difficulty in attracting qualified personnel.

We can’t bury our heads in the sand and pretend these issues don’t exist. If one really cares about his/her country, this is the sort of dialogue he/she should be espousing and promoting. My views have nothing to do with being negative, but rather rational in attempting to open national dialogue to address this severe limitation to our country’s development.
