National under-19 opener Trevon Griffith led from the front with an attractive 50 to lead Georgetown to an 87-run victory against East Bank at Lusignan yesterday as the City side finished unbeaten in the preliminary rounds of the Demerara Cricket Board (DCB) Inter-Association 50-overs under-19 cricket competition.
West Demerara were 118-6 against East Coast in West Bank Demerara when rain washed out the other match yesterday leaving the calculator to decide Georgetown’s opponents for Thursday’s final at Everest.
Chairman of the DCB Competitions committee could not say who would play the city lads in the final, but West Demerara (like East Coast) beat East Bank but lost to Georgetown, could be the team to advance on a better net run rate. At Lusignan, Georgetown, resting six of their players to give other members of their squad a chance to be viewed by the Demerara selectors, batted first and made 180 all out in 36 overs with the left-handed Griffith stroking an even half-century in his first match of the four-team competition.
National under-17 opener Quincy Ovid-Richardson supported with 29 while former Guyana under-15 player Toralva Scipio (28) and Guyana under-17 Captain Dexter Solomon (27) also contributed with the bat.
Ex-Guyana under-15 off-spinner Jagdesh Bishun took 5-27 for East Bank who were bowled out for 93 in 39.5 overs despite 23 from Napaul Rajunandan and 18 from Avish Persaud. Left-arm spinner Raj Nanan took 4-12 and got support from West Indies under-15 leg-spinner Amir Khan who took a hat-trick in his first game in the competition and finished with 3-19. Medium pacer Carlos LaRose took 2-11.
Manager of the Georgetown team Bharat Mangru informed that Seon Daniels, Andre Stoll, Delon Fernandes, Totaram Bishun, Ricardo Devers and Ryan Rajmangal were the players rested yesterday.
At Canal, Vikash Dhaniram made 24 and Ameer Khan 23 for West Demerara before the rain ended the contest just after noon. Yashpaul Ramsaywack took 2-21 for East Coast.
It is understood that the Demerara team to oppose Essequibo from Saturday at Anna Regina in the first round of the GTM under-19 Inter-County tournament will be selected after Thursday’s final and it is unclear why a limited overs competition would be used by the DCB to pick a three-day team.
