Dear Editor,
I am an avid reader of Freddie Kissoon’s column but I think that for his essay on Good Friday he should have chosen a different subject. By his own admission he is on shaky ground as he says “Now I may be wrong” and “I will admit that my thesis is weak because …”
The first thing to point out is that Good Friday is observed by Christians as the day that Jesus was crucified not the day he rose from the dead – that is Easter Sunday.
Secondly, Freddie mentions the countless Christians that he has met who do not live up to the example that Jesus set.
I agree that some of the acts committed by some people in the world sometimes make me think that God must be regretting that he created human beings. However, I have read about and met countless Christians who I am sure that Jesus would be proud of and who even today die for their faith. Christians are still persecuted and murdered in many countries today including Sudan, Pakistan and India.
Many Christians in the world share what they have with the poor and sometimes leave the comfort and security of their homes to work in impoverished or dangerous places. Although Christian voices are many time drown out by more powerful voices or the media, they too speak up against war, oppression, corruption and other evils. Admittedly, the church as an historic movement has sometimes allied itself with the powerful or with the status quo. But reforms have also emanated from the church.
Freddie himself notes the Anglican and Catholic Churches fight against rigged elections. This has taken place not only in Guyana, but in other places as well, such as South Africa and the Philippines. Moreover, Christians in different parts of the world have been at the forefront of campaigning for social and economic justice.
I know that in Guyana there are many Christians who, while they might not shout or their voices might not be heard, are living faithfully and setting good examples themselves.
