Before he died about three years ago, Johnny Persaud was a golfer of some repute. The popular idiom ‘the chip doesn’t fall far from the block,’ was firmly exemplified when his son, Avinash, decided to continue the tradition. Despite a relatively short career, he has chalked up quite a few prestigious accolades.
Now, at 18 years old, the younger Persaud is desirous of venturing into the professional league. Constrained by inadequate funds, he must have been pleased when Universal Sports Complex, in Fifth Street Albertown, like the modern day fairy, acquiesced to his request for corporate support.
Yesterday afternoon, Manager of that entity, Steve Mangal, presented an airline ticket to Persaud to facilitate a trip to Barbados to participate in yet another golf tournament in that country.
The tournament will tee off on 23rd and culminates on the 25th. The players will compete at three venues – Sandy Lane, Barbados Golf Club and Westmoreland.
Persaud, whose involvement in the sport spans 5 years, has won the Millennium Championships in the Twin Island Republic last year. He returned to that country and placed second in the Trinidad and Tobago Open from March 5 – 8 last. According to Persaud, this is the most prestigious tournament staged in the Twin Island Republic.
The young golfer admits that he hardly engages in local competition but uses the facilities at the Lusignan golf Course to practice and hone his skills. He said that he is aiming to play professional golf very soon and is currently a member of the Millennium Club in Trinidad and Tobago. He also has his eyes riveted on the Herman Cup, a prestigious, professional accolade.
Meanwhile, Mr. Mangal said that the Universal Sports Store was pleased to render support to the young golfer. “This arrangement commenced in 2006 and since then we have had no reason to retract from our commitment,” Mangal disclosed.
He said that the management of his firm was so impressed with the skill demonstrated by Persaud that they have pitched in with other forms of support.
These include hotel accommodation whenever Persaud is on overseas engagements, airline tickets, allowances and equipment. “We have recently renewed our commitment to extend up to 2010,” Mangal intimated. Persaud leaves the country next Tuesday.
