Dear Sir,
I refer to an article appearing in Kaieteur News dated April 07, 2009 under the caption “Athlete petitions for support for Carifta Games” which featured a photograph of Janella Jonas receiving an undisclosed sum of money from Mr. Kirwyn Mars – Chairman of the South Georgetown Branch of the Guyana Teachers’ Union.
In this article Mr. Mars is quoted as saying that this donation was given to Ms. Jonas to help to make her passage to get to St. Lucia; that Jonas needs another two hundred thousand dollars ($200,000) for food, accommodation and miscellaneous expenses in St. Lucia.
Please be advised that the cost of Ms. Jonas’s airfare was borne exclusively by TCL Inc who issued a cheque to the Connections Travel Service to cover same.
The Athletics Association would be very grateful and pleased if this erroneous article can be retraced and the general public be made aware of the facts.
The Athletics Association of Guyana was unaware of any such donations being made to Ms. Jonas until that article appeared in your newspaper. We would like to have this issue clarified soonest since we have the responsibility to keep our relations with Sponsors/Donors and general public intact.
We wish to further advise that in the future any donations being made to athletes in the form of sponsorship should be made payable to the Athletics Association.
We use this opportunity to apologise to the TCL Guyana Inc for the embarrassment and inconvenience caused to them.
We look forward to your continued support to the Development of Track and Field in Guyana.
Colin Boyce
President
Editor’s note: The presentation was done publicly and what was reported was what was said by Mr Mars, a teacher at the school.
We regret any inconvenience
