Even as the world experience a recession that has caused Guyanese in the Diaspora to cut back on the gift packages, some overseas based Guyanese remain staunchly committed to their corporate duty and continue to render support to their countrymen. Last Wednesday, Kaieteur Sport witnessed an act of love for country by overseas-based Guyanese, Carl Veecock.
A former local chess player now residing in Canada, Veecock spends most of his time imparting valuable tips to young chess players in his adopted home. He said his target group comprises of children between the ages of 6-14 since he feels that they are more receptive to his teachings.
Veecock had planned to ship the gift to Guyana but an unfortunate death in the family has precipitated an earlier than expected visit to Guyana. He decided to take the opportunity to donate several William Staunton size, tube chess sets, to the Checkmates Chess Club (CCC), an entity based in Albouystown, and managed by Jimmy Ramnarayan.
Veecock also presented the club with several extracts of various teaching instructions compiled during his 15 years of active competition. He urged the youths to study the extracts diligently as they could make the difference between their advancement to a higher level.
The chess instructor said that his love for the game as well as his desire to keep abreast of chess developments in Guyana inspires him to surf the net everyday. It was through such means that he became aware of the existence of the CCC.
He said also that after reading an article in another section of the media where Ramnarayan had appealed for public assistance for the youths of the Checkmate Chess Club he decided to do something about it. “I just knew that I had to help,” Veecock declared.
He subsequently contacted President of the local Chess Federation, Errol Tiwari, to arrange to have the sets delivered. Unfortunately, even before he could have shipped the gift to Guyana, a member of his family passed away and forced him to expedite his travel plans. He decided to kill the proverbial ‘two birds with one stone.’
Yesterday afternoon, at a simple ceremony at the Keishars Hadfield Street Branch, Veecock handed over the sets to Akeem Greene and Adam Ramnarayan, two of the young players of the CCC.
Jimmy Ramnarayan expressed gratitude to Veecock for the gift while promising to utilize them for the development of the youngsters of Albouystown. “I want to assure you that one day the CCC would produce a grandmaster,’ he told Veecock.
Ramnarayan also acknowledged the input of treasurer of the Chess Federation, Shiv Nandalall who he said visits the CCC on Saturdays to impart knowledge as well as offer any other needed support. Tournament Director of the Guyana Chess Federation, Irshad Mohammed was also on hand to witness the presentation.
