The quest to become the top knock-out club in the city and bragging rights, at least for the next year, commenced with 16 teams in the hunt a few weeks ago, but now it is down to the final four and in the homestretch approaching the final turn in the Banks Premium Beer knock-out Cup.
Gunning for a place in the final are Alpha United, Guyana Defence Force, Sunburst Camptown and Fruta Conquerors.
Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United, just back from Haiti where they lost to the host country’s Tempete FC in their return Caribbean Football Union Club Champions Cup game 2-0, will appear against the Guyana Defence Force in the feature semi-final on Sunday evening at the Tucville ground.
Alpha has a very strong line up on paper and with the likes of striker Kithson Bain (Grenada) and midfielder Anthony Bennett (Jamaica) coupled with defender and captain Charles Pollard seems to be a tough unit to get past.
The Soldiers, who disposed of the formidable Pele in their quarter-final game, will not be intimidated by such a powerful line-up and will be coming well prepared for the intensity such and encounter brings with it.
Gavin Wilson, who came on as a substitute and scored against Pele, will team up with Warren Gilkes, the other goal scorer against Pele and Stellon David as the leading men up front. The midfield and defence are expected to lend the necessary solid support.
Sunday’s opening encounter will see another match up between old rivals Fruta Conquerors and Sunburst Camptown, dubbed ‘Clash of the Juices’.
The Campbellville boys are leading the Tucville boys having won the last two encounters at this level.
Camptown will start Sunday’s game with the edge but Conquerors cannot be written off as both teams have gone through some changes since the last meeting.
With some of older players phasing out, the younger brigade will be called upon to carry the sway.
Captain Orlando Gilgeous, Troy ‘Bugs’ Prescod, Kester Alleyne, Reshawn Sandiford, Telson McKinnon and Richie Richards will all have to click along with their teammates as Camptown seek to maintain their advantage.
Conquerors will surely be going all out to halt Camptown’s progress and to achieve this objective will call on the services of veteran Lester ‘Puppy’ Peters, Jomo Hinds, Captain Joylon Harry, Delon Williams supported by the younger brigade including Trevon Lythcott, Lumumba Hinds, goal keeper Oswald Cornette, Eon Andrews, Kacy John, Manasseh Primo and Sheldon Shepherd.
Who will advance to the big game, is any body’s guess. Sunday night the answers will be known.
The venue is the Tucville ground with kick off scheduled for 18:00hrs.
