The recent proliferation of murders and other decadent behaviour in the Guyanese society has raised the ire of law-abiding citizens, who are now calling on responsive action from the government and other social groups to stem the tide.
The adverse reports in the daily newspapers seem to suggest a breakdown in values and a total absence or lack of concern for the laws of the land.
To this end, the Guyana Responsible Parenthood Association (GRPA) has contrived a committee to organize a debate competition among youths between the ages of 18-25 from seven of the 10 administrative regions. Subsequently, three persons from among the best debaters would be selected to represent Guyana at a Caribbean Championship slated for a Caricom country, to be announced later. Several members of the GRPA and a chaperone will also accompany the team of debaters.
Head of the GRPA, Frederick Cox, is the Project Manager and chairman of the local organizing committee for the Inter-Regional debate competition. He said that the idea for the debate emanated from Senior Programme Advisor of the International Planned Parenthood Federation/Western Hemisphere Region, Lucella Campbell, who felt that the involvement of young people in constructive debate may provide a better insight into the issues to facilitate action from an informed perspective. However, while the organizers had initially hoped to incorporate youths from all 10 administrative regions, inadequate funding has stymied the involvement of persons from Regions One, Five and Seven.
Towards this end, organizers are making a spirited plea for donations in an effort to realize their objectives.
The preliminary round of the debate got underway on March 19 and ended on April 2, with the quarter finals slated to get underway on April 29. Among some of the topics being debated are gender violence, alcoholism, health, HIV/AIDS and sexual reproduction,
The other committee members are Dr. Maude Bullen-McKenzie (Assistant Project Manager), Simon Pollard (Finance Officer), Deborah Thomas-Maison (Administrative Officer), Basil Bradshaw (Technical adviser) and Orrin Major (Public Relations Officer).
This group has been meeting once per week since January with an aim of putting the mechanisms in place to facilitate a successful debate.
The GRPA is a non-governmental organization that aims to promote responsible sexual behaviours and family life through information, education, collaboration and services. (Michael Benjamin)
