Winners Connection and host Netrockers will face off in the finals of the Netrockers FC/Linden Town Week under-19 football tournament.
In pulsating semi-final play, Winners squeezed past Eagles United by the narrowest of margins, 5-4 on penalty kicks after a thrilling 2-2 tie in regulation and extra time.
Winners jumped ahead 2-0 by the 17th minute of the encounter, Owen Williams finding the back of the nets in the 11th minute and 6 minutes later, Jermaine Fordyce doubled the advantage.
At this point, Winners were harbouring thoughts of comfort but that was soon dislodged as the tough Eagles unit fought back admirably. Sherwin Waldron reduced the deficit by one in the 30th minute and to the delight of the Eagles team, Kennard Simon cancelled out Winners’ advantage 2 minutes later; game on!
The remaining minutes of regulation and even extra time failed to break the deadlock. With penalty kicks the only other means of deciding the winner, Eagles muffed at their fifth and final kick which would have pushed the game into sudden death penalty kicks but that was not to be as Winners held their nerves to triumph 5-4.
Host club Netrockers advanced to the championship match in somewhat easier yet nerve racking circumstances as they triumphed 1-0 over Flamingos. Clarence ‘The Shark’ Huggins sealed the deal in the 8th minute, a goal Netrockers were able to defend to the end.
The final is set for this Sunday from 16:00hrs at the Bayrock Community Centre ground and will be preceded by the third place playoff between Eagles and Flamingo at 13:00hrs. The organisers have added a 3 a-side knockout competition on the same day for any 8 teams wishing to compete.
