Brazilian dredge owner, Edmilson De Souza, is in a stable condition at the Georgetown Public Hospital, nursing three gunshot wounds sustained during an attack by armed bandits on Monday morning.
In hospital yesterday, De Souza, speaking from his ward B2 bed, said that six heavily armed bandits attacked the camp which is situated at Aranka, Cuyuni River around 05:30 hrs on Monday.
He opined that all the gunmen were Guyanese; he said that he believed they were Guyanese because of their accent. De Souza said that at the time of the robbery himself and wife along with five other staffers were sleeping.
He said that the men who were wearing only short pants had their faces tied with handkerchiefs.
The miner said that after the gunmen came into the camp they “tied up everybody and started to beat them”.
His wife, Maria Chavez, sustained most of the beating which was done with an AK-47, she was beaten in the head and upper body.
He further told Kaieteur News that heavily armed men who were brandishing AK 47s proceeded to demand cash and jewellery from the occupants.
“After they come into the camp they asked us for money but we really didn’t have money.” The man said that they didn’t have much money because their mining business was facing financial problems.
“The reason why we didn’t have any money really was because we were having money problems and were sort of depending on employees for support”.
De Souza said that the gunmen only got away with a small amount of gold from the employees.
He said that when they saw that there was nothing else to take they proceeded to leave the camp.
“They were leaving and firing shots in the camp’s direction” De Souza explained. The man said that he was shot by the bandits three times.
De Souza said, “They shot me in my hand, and two times in my back”.
The man said that he has been mining in Guyana for the past four years. He said that he and wife are now contemplating a return to their homeland because of the incident.
