President can now only serve two 3 year terms, name changed to BCB
The Berbice Cricket Board of Control (BCBC) will now be known as the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB).
This decision among others, were made at a special meeting of the Board which was attended by most of the Board’s member clubs where several important changes were made to the constitution as the entity seeks to modernize its operation.
In total, three amendments were made to the constitution; the motions were proposed and duly passed.
Number one:
The Board would now be known as the Berbice Cricket Board after members passed a motion to delete the words ‘of Control’ from the name.
Number two:
The term for the executive has been increased from the current one year to two years. The Berbice Cricket Board was the only board in Guyana which had a one year term in place and members agreed that the elected officials needed more time to fulfill their mandate before facing the polls again.
Number three:
The third motion is to limit the terms a President can serve to three (3) two (2) years terms. This means that no elected President can serve for more than six consecutive years.
Members were of the view that six years was enough for a President to serve after which new ideas and visions should be allowed to blossom. This motion makes the Berbice Cricket Board the only Cricket Board in the West Indies to place a term limit on its Presidency. The next election for the Board would take place in December 2010.
Members of the Board also voted to be sterner with clubs who participate in tournaments and do not submit report forms in the mandatory 72 hours.
Clubs failing to fulfill this requirement in the stipulated time frame in round robin tournaments will lose half of their points won in that match while for knock-out tournaments teams would be fined $5,000 and must pay it before their next match.
Board members decided on this course of action after it was pointed out that many clubs have failed to submit report forms and this affects the smooth running of the tournament and public relations.
The Berbice Cricket Board also decided to induct three former Presidents of the Board as Honorary Life members.
Those to be inducted as Life members are Messrs Malcolm Peters, Roy Baijnauth and Rampersaud Ramnanan who served the board for more than a decade each with dedication and a high standard of performance.
Meanwhile, among the upcoming plans for the next three months would be the hosting of the Tribute to Heroes Programme, Filming of a 70 minute Coaching DVD by Berbice Coaches, a one week Cricket Academy for 30 under-15 players, official launching of the Berbice under-19 All Time XI and a fundraising raffle.
