Simone Etwaroo, 26, of 44 Providence East Bank Demerara was yesterday denied her pretrial liberty by Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson.
It was alleged that September 29, 2008 with intent to defraud she obtained $100,000 from Republic Bank by a cheque which purported to show that it was issued by Ramchand Netram.
It was also alleged that on September 20, last, with the intent to defraud she obtained $50,000 from Demerara Bank purporting to show that it was issued by Netram.
Another charge states that the defendant on September 11, 2008 she obtained $40,000 from Demerara Bank purporting to show that it was issued by the said Netram; it was also alleged that the defendant on August 20 with intent to defraud she obtained $75,000 from Demerara Bank.
It was further alleged that she also obtained $230,000 from both Demerara and Republic Banks on cheques purportedly issued by Netram.
She was not required to plead to the charges since they were all indictable.
Etwaroo, is being represented by attorney at law Paul Fung-at-Fat, who said that a total of $495,000 is missing. The prosecutor said that more charges would be laid against the defendant. The lawyer said that this move would be highly prejudicial.
He said that she is the sole bread winner of the family and she is in the process of settling the matter. To date she has offered Netram $500,000.
Fung –a-Fat said that his client’s signature did not appear on any of the cheques.
