After running from the police for almost one week, murder suspect, Devon Limerick, turned himself in to the police at the Springlands Police Station, on the Corentyne Coast, at approximately 14:30 hours yesterday, confirming suspicions that he may have run to Berbice in his efforts to evade the police.
Since April 3, the police had reported that the 31-year-old murder suspect had been sighted somewhere in Berbice.
Limerick was wanted in connection with the April 1 fatal stabbing of Beverley Mangru, at her residence on 77, New Road, Vreed-en-Hoop.
The attacker fled the scene of the crime, after locking the front door of the house and the gate, preventing anyone from entering the house and rendering assistance to the wounded woman.
The woman met her death after a heated row with her reputed husband. The suspect apparently often accused Mangru of being unfaithful.
Mangru’s body was discovered in a pool of blood, after police ranks were forced to break down the front door of the house, in order to gain access to the body.
They had to cut the padlocks on the gate before that. Reports from the Vreed-en-Hoop community stated that Mangru’s death has left the neighbourhood in a state of disbelief.
The dead woman’s landlord said that on the day Mangru met her death, the couple was heard arguing, but no one took it seriously. Only when she began to scream, did the landlord become alarmed.
“After I heard the glass breaking and I heard her screaming, I called her friend who lives down the street,” the landlord stated. That was at approximately 19:30 hours.
Reshma, the friend whom the landlord called, said that she did not think that the landlord was serious.
It was not until the he called her again saying that the argument had subsided, did she decide to go and check on Mangru.
“He (landlord) said that he wasn’t hearing the woman’s (Mangru) voice anymore,” Reshma recalled. The police were called shortly afterwards, to check on Mangru.
The door was secured with two heavy-duty padlocks, and as such the police were forced to break it down. Mangru’s sister, Lorraine Persaud, said that her sister and the suspect had only been living together for approximately four months. Reports from other family members said that Limerick was very possessive and this had caused Mangru to tell him that she wanted to end the relationship, the day before she died.
The dead woman had apparently asked Limerick to leave her alone and suggested that he go visit some of his relatives. He refused. After the discovery of the body, the police had launched a massive manhunt for Limerick, but their search did not bear any fruit until he surrendered himself to police ranks yesterday.
In response to Mangru’s death, Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Priya Manickchand, said that women must take action and report each and every case of domestic abuse to the police so that action can be taken immediately.
Manickchand encouraged battered women to make reports to the police. “The government cannot know what is happening in each and every house in the country,” said Manickchand, “We cannot help you if you do not report these acts to the police and seek our help.”
