Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, yesterday sentenced Derrick Joseph to three years’ imprisonment.
The man pleaded guilty to possession of a 20-gauge cartridge and a 20 gauge single barrel shot gun without being the holder of a firearm licence on April 1, last at Aruka River, North West District.
According to Joseph he had bought the gun from a man known as “Hendricks” for $2,000. The man said that gun was used for hunting and nothing else. Joseph asked the magistrate for leniency by virtue of the fact that he is the father of five.
Police Prosecutor, Robert Clement, told the court that on the day in question, the police were responding to a report about a theft in the Aruka River area.
He said that the police noticed that Joseph was acting in a suspicious manner and searched him to find the cartridge in right side pocket.
The prosecutor further stated that the gun was found nearby under a piece of wood. He was arrested and charged with the present offence.
The Presiding Magistrate sentenced Joseph and ordered that he pay a fine of $75,000.
