Congratulations to Narsingh Deonarine on becoming the first batsman to reach 1000 runs in Regional First Class Cricket Season, but the record breaking milestone by the flamboyant left hander is not the first time the gifted Guyanese name have been associated with being the first to have achieved a feat at the Regional level.
During the 1998 Under-15 Championship in Jamaica Narsingh became the first batsman to score a century in Regional Under-15 cricket since the tournament’s inauguration in 1996. The following year, 1999 in Barbados, he had the honour of recording the first century in Regional Under-19 Limited Overs cricket.
Albion’s second test player is also the first Guyanese to captain the West Indies under-19 team at an ICC World Cup and is the first Guyanese to represent the West Indies at the Under-19 Level on three occasions.
He superseded compatriots Timur Mohamed, Roger Harper, Nicholas DeGroot, Andrew Jackman, Vishal Nagamootoo, Reon King, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Andre Percival and Ron Matthews, who all had the honour of representing the regional at the Under-19 Level on two occasions.
Strange enough Narsingh’s cricket development started at a club that hosted the first One Day International in the West Indies. This letter is dedicated to the memory of the late cricketer Troy ‘Skeebow’ Greene.
