The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), as part of its preparations for the holding of Local Government Elections later this year, held a two-day training programme last weekend.
The training session was held at the St Joseph High School, Woolford Avenue, Georgetown and was done for the selection of Trainers who will be tasked with teaching temporary field staff to be involved in the conduct of LGE and its precursor Claims and Objections(C & O) exercise.
According to GECOM, the training programme targeted 122 applicants, who met the eligibility for appointment. They have been drawn from across Guyana’s ten Administrative Regions/Electoral Districts, and who would have applied for the position of temporary trainers.
The successful candidates, who will receive further on the job training, will be appointed to teach temporary field staff, to be hired, to work in the respective Registration/Electoral Divisions for the C & O exercise and local government elections.
The various sessions sought to provide the trainers with the knowledge required for the efficient conduct of the C & O exercise and elections, and to familiarize them with the strategic methodologies to be used for imparting appropriate training to the temporary field staff.
In addition, they were helped to develop an understanding of the organizational structure that will be used to facilitate the efficient conduct of the C & O exercise and elections.
According to the GECOM, the sessions were deliberately structured to provide the trainers with the necessary skills to prepare appropriate teaching aids. The trainers were required to equip themselves with the modus operandi for the completion of the various Registration Forms, which will have to be filled out in connection with the nature of the transaction to be done.
The suitability of a candidate for appointment will be determined through an evaluation process, which was conducted at various stages of the training programme, Public Relations Officer, Vishnu Persaud, said yesterday.
Dr. Steve Surujbally, Chairman of GECOM, said that the candidates must ensure that they accurately learn the intricacies, technicalities and legalities associated with the conduct of registration and elections.
“Electoral issues are very complex and must be carried without flaws. You must get it right” he emphasised.
Dr. Surujbally underscored the need for the successful candidates to conduct themselves in a manner that will not bring disrepute to GECOM. ”Your actions, in carrying out your responsibilities, must always be of such that they help to build the image of this organisation.”
Resource persons at the workshop were Mr. Gocool Boodoo – Chief Election Officer, Mr. Calvin Benn – Deputy Chief Election Officer, Mr. Keith Lowenfield – Assistant Chief Election Officer, Mr. Deolall Ramlall – Civic & Voter Education Manager and Mrs. Beverley Critchlow – Voter Registration Manager, Mr. Colin April, Logistics Manager, Ms. Indira Anandjit, Human Resources Manager, Mr. Joseph Gilgeous, Temporary Assistant to the DCEO, Mr. Lawrence Duncan, Logistics Coordinator, and Mr. Duarte Hetsberger, Supervisor – Photography.
