Local scrabble players will be engaged in a hectic year of activities even as they prepare for participation in the World Scrabble tournament slated for October 26-29 at the Zon Regency Hotel in Johor Bahru, Malaysia.
Already, two tournaments have been completed, the National Novices and Intermediate championships, and the third, ‘Wordsmith,’ will be played tomorrow night at the Chamber of Commerce Building, Waterloo Street.
The pre-qualification for the Nationals tournament will be held on April 19 followed by three days of stiff competition among the top seeds on May 1st, 5th and 10th to determine the best two players to contest a three best in five tournament for the National title. The eventual winner will then represent Guyana at the World Championships.
After a similar three days of intense competition last year, Fred Collins and Ewart Adams earned the right to play each other to determine Guyana’s representation at the World tournament. Adams had drawn first blood, winning the first game but a wily Collins had rebounded to take the following three games and the set. He was Guyana’s representative at the championships held in Mumbai India but was unable to capture the elusive accolade, eventually won by Nigel Richards of New Zealand.
Having already staged the Novices and Intermediate championships, activities continue tomorrow evening with the ‘Wordsmith’ a relatively new format that deals with anagrams. The winner of this tournament will pocket ten thousand dollars, donated by National Champion, Fred Collins. However, since GASP executives are still testing this format, they have confined tomorrow’s tournament to the regular players.
The players return four days later for a Class ‘A’ tournament before the first fund-raiser, a fish fry and scrabble fest, on Monday April 13.
Another ‘Wordsmith’ is scheduled for June 11 to be followed by ‘The Fantasy Nails Lien’ on June 21. The Earl Vigilance Memorial Open will follow one week later, on Sunday June 28 and will be held in Vigilance’s hometown, Linden. Vigilance, a mean scrabble player, died in an industrial accident in his hometown, Linden, about three years ago.
The Vigilance Memorial precedes a brunch and Scrabble Fest slated for the National Park on Caricom Day to be followed by the Emancipation Day tournament on August 1.
Another ‘Wordsmith’ is also scheduled for August 6 followed by a Class ‘A’ tournament on August 30. The tenderfoots will have a chance to shine at the Entry Level tournament at the Malteenoes Cricket Club on September 13. One week later, on September 20, the players return at the Chambers of Commerce Building for the Insurance Brokers Lien trophy.
‘Wordsmith #5 will be staged on October 8 at the Chamber of Commerce and will precede another Intermediate tournament on October 11, at the same venue.
Activities will culminate with the Metro Lien and the Scrabble Scramble tournaments in December.
Meanwhile, players desirous of competing in tomorrow’s tournament are asked to register early as word formation time is 20:00hrs, sharp.
