The family of former Chancellor of the Judiciary, Justice Kenneth George, and members of the judiciary are mourning his death. Justice George died early yesterday morning at the St. Joseph’s Mercy Hospital after a period of illness. He was 79.
Family members confirmed his death yesterday and issued a brief statement with the promise of providing more details at a later stage.
Former Chancellor George served as Guyana’s Chief Justice before taking over from Justice Keith Messiah as Head of the Judiciary.
He was awarded the Order of Roraima and the Cacique’s Crown of Honour for his service to the judicial society.
He obtained a Bachelor of Arts in 1951 and his LLB (London) three years later. He attended several international conferences pertaining to the administration of justice.
He worked as a private practitioner in British Guiana between 1955 and 1958 before becoming a Magistrate.
Between 1964 and 1967 the late Justice George served as the Registrar of the Supreme Court and Deeds before becoming a Puisne Judge from 1967 to 1977.
He was appointed Justice of Appeal from 1977 to 1981 when he became Chief Justice, a position he held for seven years.
As Chancellor, he was the Head of the Court of Appeal from 1988 to 1995, after which he left for The Bahamas where he served as a Justice of Appeal before heading to Belize, to hold a similar position between 1988 and 2000.
He returned to The Bahamas in 2000 to head that country’s Court of Appeal from January to March of that year.
The late Justice George also served in leadership capacities outside the legal profession.
He was the Chairman of the Cane Grove Flood Committee, Tax Reform Commission, Judicial Service Commission and the Advisory Council for the Honours of Guyana.
He also headed a commission to enquire into the operations and workings of the Post Office Corporation and to make recommendations for improvements, as well as a commission to enquire into cause and effect of the escape of millions of gallons of cyanide contaminated effluent into one of Guyana’s main river systems.
Between March and October, the late Justice Kenneth George prepared the first draft of amended rules of the High Court of Guyana. These rules should come into effect shortly.
He left an indelible mark on the judicial society of Guyana, so much so that his daughter, Roxanne George-Wiltshire is now a serving judge.
Apart from Justice George-Wiltshire, he leaves to mourn his wife, Hazel, and children Dr. Kenneth George Jnr., Mrs. Andrea Harrowen and Mr. Michael George.
