– Minister Manickchand
“The Government cannot know what is happening in each and every house.
We cannot help you if you do not report these actions to the police and seek our help…”
With the recent increase in the number of cases of domestic violence in the country, that mostly end with the woman being dead, Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Priya Manickchand has said that women need to take action and report each and every case of domestic abuse to the police so that action can be taken immediately.
Minister Manickchand was at the time speaking to Kaieteur News about the recent murder of 39-year-old Beverley Ann Mangru of New Road Vreed-en- Hoop, who was allegedly stabbed to death by her husband after a nasty domestic dispute on April 1, 2009.
According to the Human Services Minister, there are many interventions that have been made by the Government so that women can seek and access these services instead of living a life of physical abuse.
“The government cannot know what is happening in each and every house in the country. We cannot help you, if you do not report these acts to the police and seek our help,” the minister said.
She outlined that there is the shelter for battered women, along with strong, comprehensive and stringent legal provision, the domestic violence policy and, only recently, a motion was passed in the National Assembly for all Parliamentarians to work together and aggressively tackle the issue of domestic violence in the country.
According to Minister Manickchand, since it has been recognized that domestic violence occurs mostly among the poorer class of women and some persons won’t be able to access the courts, legal aid centres have been placed all across Guyana.
She admitted that there continues to be unacceptable behaviour on the part of husbands, lovers and boyfriends and as such there is a need for the government to continue forging ahead with the number of interventions already in place.
Mangru, a mother of four, died from some stab wounds to the throat.
Her lover, Devon Limerick, who is the suspect, is still on the run, but police believe that he is hiding out somewhere in Berbice.
Mangru’s death comes in the wake of a spate of domestic violence, which has been plaguing the country.
On March 12, her former reputed husband stabbed Savitri Arjune, a mother of two, to death moments after she had left her Herstelling, East Bank Demerara home.
It was also reported that she also had endured years of abuse and threats by the man. He too is still on the run.
Meanwhile, on February 8, Latoya Conway, a mother of three was stabbed by her husband after a heated argument between the two. She was hospitalized and a day after, Conway succumbed to her injuries.
Also, a man went on a chopping spree and chopped his wife to death in their Oronoque, Port Kaituma home following an argument over a party on February 15th.
After killing his wife, the man turned on the woman’s 16-year-old daughter, chopping her across the face.
He however, turned himself over to the police.
