– remanded for beating her
Thirty-seven year old Richie Hicks called Richie Alexander who told his wife she should go and prostitute herself to get money to cook and send their children to school was given some time to reflect on his attitude with a couple of days on remand.
Hicks of 5th Street, Whim, Corentyne, Berbice, was on Thursday refused bail by Magistrate Chandra Sohan when he appeared before him at the Whim Magistrate’s Court to answer to the charge of unlawfully assaulting his reputed wife of 14 years, Dhanwantie Ramgobin.
Prosecutor Roberto Figueira told the Court that on March 30, Hicks, who was described as a regular wife beater, went home after work and refused to give his wife any money to cook or to send his children to school.
The Prosecutor said that the woman told her daughter to ask her father for money to go to school and buy things to eat.
Instead hicks told the child to tell her mother that if she wants money let her go and ‘pick fare’ on the road.
The woman had told investigators that she was fed up with the situation at home and was on her way out of the house to go and look for work, when the man held her and started cuffing her in her head, causing visible swelling.
The woman was also thrown to the ground and kicked in the ribs.
She managed to escape and later made a report to the station. The abuser was arrested and charged.
