A lacklustre performance from Guyana’s Alpha ‘The hammer’ United and a hungrier Tempete resulted in the Haitian football club recording a 2-0 victory on their home turf in the return leg of the CFU/CONCACAF Club Football Championship yesterday.
Goals in either half saw the home team advancing to the next stage of the competition, while Alpha will return home on Thursday after leaving Haiti on Wednesday.
According to reports coming out of Haiti, the home team played robust football and were a totally different unit in relation to their hunger as against their visit here. They attacked constantly and moved the ball better on pitch than the Guyanese.
Alpha were guilty of lacking verve in the midfield area and failed to capitalise on the few chances they created. Kiston Bane came closest to scoring for ‘The Hammer’, heading onto the post. Their strikers were not fed enough throughout the contest as the home side dominated.
Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Sports, Steve Ninvalle, who is also PRO of the club, stated when contacted by this newspaper, that even though they lost, the positive gained is the need for participation in tournaments of this nature to improve the standard of play both at club and country level.
He stated that the cost of the trip was very high but it was beneficial for the side to see where they are at in comparison to regional teams. Ninvalle noted that more competition of this nature will only raise the level of the game both with in and without the club.
The PS stressed the importance for local teams in general to compete against regional sides to improve their standard.
He stated that playing against each other will only lift the level to one point but external contests will advance them even further.
