Jamaica take 1st innings points from Guyana

Jamaica took an 81-run lead on first innings against Guyana on the penultimate day of their 13th round four-day WICB regional first-class cricket tournament at Jarrett Park yesterday.

By the close Jamaica were 215-7 in their second innings enjoying a lead of 296 going into the final day today.

This was after Guyana, who resumed the third day on 262-6 replying to Jamaica’s 389 were dismissed for 308, forty minutes before lunch.

Assad Fudadin, overnight on 32, fell three short of his fifty when he hit leg-spinner Gavin Wallace to mid-on and nobody else apart from overnight batsman Derwin Christian (15) got into double figures yesterday for the South Americans as medium pacer David Bernard took 4-86. He got support from leg-spinners Gavin Wallace (3-39) and Odean Browne (2-55).

Leg spinner Davendra Bishoo then took his wicket tally for the season to 33 by taking 3-36 in the Jamaica second innings as West Indies Test player Brendon Nash finished the day unbeaten on 40 after Donovan Pagan had struck a cameo 45.

The host will be looking to score some quick runs this morning with the hope of declaring and bowling out Guyana on a last day track to end their season with an outright win.

Still at the bottom of the points table, Guyana will be desperate for a draw to return home for their final game against Barbados from Friday with at least 34 points.

Earlier Christian was leg before to Bernard at 273-7 before Fudadin departed at 300-8.

Wallace then got rid of Veerasammy Permaul at 307-9 before Bernard sent Brandon Bess packing for a duck leaving Bishoo unbeaten on nine as Jamaica took first innings points. Leg-spinner Odean Browne who now has 49 wickets, supported well for the defending champions.

By lunch the Jamaicans, with the title already in the bag even before a ball was bowled in this match, reached 28-0 by lunch with Brenton Parchment on (7) and Danza Hyatt (90 at the crease.

Watched by a small but vocal crowd, the Jamaicans looked to attack on a track with unpredictable bounce and raced to 50 from just 57 balls and 55 minutes as Bess, who bowled very well in Trinidad, again lacked control and gave wicketkeeper Christian all sorts of problems with a barrage of balls way down the leg side.

Jamaica’s first 11 runs were extras even as Barnwell caused a few problems with the new ball.

Parchment survived a very confident LBW appeal off Barnwell and responded with a thumping cover driven boundary and a brutal straight six off consecutive balls before Barnwell made the break through at 59-1.

Parchment, who galloped to 29 off 33 balls with three fours and a six, clipped Barnwell low to Sewnarine Chattergoon at square leg where he held a sharp diving catch to end the partnership.

Pagon and Hyatt, who was dropped at mid-off by Permaul off Barnwell on 16, took the score to 95 before Hyatt (31) was removed by Permaul at 95-2.

Skipper Tamar Lambert (7) soon lofted Bishoo to deep mid-wicket just before tea to leave Jamaica on 112-3. By the tea the host were 116-3 with Pagon on 23 and Bernard on three and Jamaica leading by 197 runs.

Guyana struck in the first over after tea when Bernard (6) was bowled by Permaul at 120-4 while Carlton Baugh (0) was run out and Pagon was leg before to Bishoo 159-6 as Guyana fought back.

Daren Powell hit a quick 27 before he top edged a sweep off Bishoo to be caught on the pitch by Steven Jacobs to leave Jamaica on 207-7. Browne (0*) and the 31-year-old Nash, looking for his first fifty this season, were the unbeaten Jamaicans when play ended yesterday.

Permaul has so far taken 2-45 for the Guyanese who are enduring their worst ever regional first-class season since playing the inaugural regional first class game in 1865 against Barbados at the Garrison Savannah in Barbados.
