Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Priya Manickchand said that the ministry would be launching an investigation into last Friday’s incident in which a 13 year old aborted a well-formed foetus in a school’s washroom.
The Minister said that whenever something like this happens, the Ministry usually moves aggressively to ensure that health and counseling are available to the child.
“We need to move quickly so that child is assured the best health care and counseling which is available,” the minister explained.
Manickchand said that in relation to the head teacher not notifying the social welfare or the police, an investigation would be launched.
She said that the head teacher probably just took the necessary step, which was to notify the child’s parent.
Minister also divulged that her Ministry is seeking to implement legislation, which would mandate and compel teachers by law to contact the ministry whenever something of this magnitude happens.
According to reports, the Third Form student went into the washroom and delivered the baby on the floor.
After delivering the baby, she reportedly wrapped it in paper and dumped it into the garbage.
It is alleged that the teen then proceeded to her classroom and pretended that nothing had happened.
However, teachers and students observed the teen clutching her stomach and crying out in pain.
They then called her mother who took her to a city hospital.
When the child’s mother arrived at the school she told teachers that her daughter is a “wayward child who listens to no one.” The mother told school officials that her daughter would leave her home and return the next day without giving a proper explanation of her whereabouts.
A nurse who spoke to Kaieteur News said that the teen could have bled to death.
Other hospital staff opined that that she may have ingested an illegal drug, which caused her to miscarry.
