Continuing on its stated and publicised mandate to proliferate basketball, the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) will host a five–a–side basketball competition and fun day on Burnham Basketball Court this weekend.
The event, which was officially identified as the ‘GABA Five–A–Side Basketball Family Fun Day’, is expected to be in the form of a retreat for clubs and family members to jump start the following weekend’s competition.
“It will actually be the launch of the Division I and III knockout competitions scheduled for the following weekend,” the first term GABA President, Trevor Rose told Kaieteur Sport recently in a brief interview on the event.
Rose said that the fun day atmosphere that will be created is not to subtract from the keen rivalries that is expected to dominate the two–day activity. He observed that the mixture of basketball and fun is to help raise funds.
“It is a fundraising activity more or less. You cannot run an association without money so we are putting on this activity to keep the GABA afloat. We need to keep implementing these fund raising ventures,” the GABA President informed.
According to Rose, the Division III five–a–side competition will be held on Saturday and the Division I contest the following day. He told this newspaper that the major clubs in the City are expected to field teams this weekend.
Apart from the basketball related activities, the event will also feature music, a drinks bar and bar–b–que chicken. The GABA has so far held two similar successful retreats and the primary aim of uniting clubs was evidential.
